Bengali Association of South Africa (BASA) is a premier non profit organization, founded in 2005 by and for the people with an interest in the language, literature, culture and heritage of Bengal. Our reach, however, is not limited to people of Bengal only as we welcome Indians who are fascinated with the culture and festivals of Bengal. We are still a nascent organization with around 38 families from in and around Johannesburg representing a highly accomplished and very successful cross section of expatriates from Bengal, various parts of India and Bangladesh.
Our mission is to promote a harmonious blend of our diverse culture and rich values with the present high-tech, fast paced, success driven way of life. With strong commitment to sustain and promote our culture and heritage and reinforcing our future generation with significant Indian values, our fundamental objective is to organize cultural events, religious festivals and social activities which provide exposure to the rich tradition and heritage of Bengal. We would like to contribute towards the needy in South Africa by our strong commitment towards social service.
We renew our festive spirits through our celebrations of Sarawati Puja, Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja every year. We attempt to bring the community together through various social events like Annual Picnic, Poila Boisakh (Bengali New year) and other activities/gatherings. We promote our cuture by organizing Rabindra Nazrul Evening and programmes during Durga Puja where our members and their children perform. We also invite various Indian associations in South Africa like Tamil, Maratha, etc to showcase their culture. We represent Bengal during celebrations of Indian festivals in South Africa viz. Holi, Independence Day, Diwali, etc. through songs, dance and recitals.
We welcome people who believe in creating a home of their own in foreign land and express desire to keep our rich culture and heritage alive by supporting the vision and objective of our association.
